Zoo Educational Programs

The Brandywine Zoo offers people of all ages an opportunity to learn more about wildlife and conservation through a variety of programs. There are seasonal programs offered throughout the year for everyone.

For teachers there is an opportunity to provide their students an experience that is fun, exciting, educational AND meets State Standards. There are several education programs that can be used to assist teachers in teaching students about wildlife, wildlife conservation, preservation, and our natural world. There are Discovery Tours which provide an educational experience at the zoo, and there is the Traveling Zoo which will come to the school. Also, there are Loan Kits available for people who have taken the training teaching how to use the kits. The zoo staff hopes teachers will consider the Brandywine Zoo a satellite classroom for teaching about science and nature.

Other educational opportunities offered at the zoo are:  Mini-Day Camps, ZooCamp, and the A.D.O.P.T. Program to help guide people through a whole new world of animals and their habitats. There is a Volunteer Program which provides support for special events, family programs, and special projects.

In addition to these programs, the Brandywine Zoo participates in the Species Survival Plan.  This is a plan which was begun by the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums to promote the long term survival of certain endangered animals. Because of the Zoo's participation in this plan, visitors may get to know first hand endangered species like the golden lion tamarin and the Siberian tiger. Also, the Zoo works to secure the survival of endangered species through captive breeding. When possible, the Brandywine Zoo works with other zoos to help reintroduce a species into the wild. Professionally run zoos, like the Brandywine, serve as the last refuge many animals have against extinction. The Zoo is proud to be an active participant in this worthwhile effort.
