Many people make mobiles, but have you ever made a mobile that moves when it is over a heater or radiator? (The warm air currents are what makes it move.)
Materials needed: oak tag or a paper plate or a file folder, scissors, markers or crayons, string, and glue
1. Either draw your
own circle with a diameter of 8 inches or use a pattern.
( pattern for 1, 2, and 3 ) Cut out the
circle and divide it into 8 equal sections.
2. Cut out one of
the sections. Put an X on each section next to it.
3. Cut the dotted
black lines and fold the part you cut, so it is sticking out a little bit.
You may color the circle to look like the top of a merry-go-round before
you cut the lines, if you want. Color both sides.
4. Glue one section
with an X over the next section with an X to make a cone.
5. Draw, color,
and cut out 4 zoo animals. Make sure you color both sides. They can either
all be the same or each one can be different. Draw your own or use the
patterns below.
( patterns for mammals
or patterns for birds
)
6. Use a piece of
thread and hang the animals from the cone. If the cone leans to one
side, the balance is wrong, and you have to move the animals along the
edge until the cone is balanced.
7. Tie a piece of
thread from the point of the cone and hang it from the ceiling or you can
balance it on a knitting needle.
8. If you balance
it on a knitting needle, put the other end of the needle in a cork, a piece
of clay, a potato covered with aluminum foil, or something like that to
hold the needle up.
9. Then put it near
a heater or a radiator and watch it move. It will turn like a real merry-go-round.
