In order to survive, animals must defend themselves from predators. There are almost as many ways they protect themselves as there are species of animals. One of the most obvious ways is with weapons, such as horns or antlers, spines or quills, sharp teeth, sharp claws, chemical spray, or poison.
Another way is by having a tough, protective outer body covering like the turtle's shell. It acts as a shield for the turtle.
If an animal doesn't have a weapon or a shield, it may have to escape as fast as it can. Some animals can run for many miles without tiring, while others sprint quickly to shelter.
Because a predator must find its prey before it can catch and eat it, many animals use camouflage. An animal's color pattern, body shape, and ability to remain absolutely still may keep it from being noticed in its habitat.
Still other animals, when they get seen, will try to bluff. They may try to make themselves bigger than what they are.
Sometimes a group of smaller animals will act together as a team to drive off a predator or to protect their territory.
