• US was neutural though both Britain and France had declared war on Germany. Germany and Austria(Anschluss union) ruled by Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia and Poland.
• "Winter War" between Russia and Finland ended in March. • Soon Germany invaded Denmark and Norway. Denmark surrendered but Norway joined with France and Britain. • Germans invaded France, Belgium, and Holland and started the"Lightning War". Though they had the help of the British Expeditionary Force, the lower countries and France were overthrown by the Germans. • First entire air battle was the Battle of Britain lasting from July -September. In Germany there were few planes but many pilots • British won the Battle of Britain and slowed Hitler's invasion plans.
• Operation Barbarossa(invasion of Russia) was started by Hitler. • In Englands major cities the Blitz continues. • North African allies in Tobruk resist German attacks. • USA enters war after attack on Pearl Harbour.
• Setbacks at Stalingrad and El Alamein causes Germany trouble. • Japanese conquere Singapore in Feburary. • Turning point of Pacific War is marked by the American victory of the Battle of Midway. • Massive execution of Jews at Auschwitz.
• Germans surrender at Stalingrad marking their first major defeat. • North African allies postpone invasion of Italy. • Italy surrenders to Germany when invasion is launched. • In Burma British and Indian forces fight the Japanese.
• In Anzio allies bomb monastery at Monte Cassino after landing. • In eastern Europe Soviet offensive gathers it's pace. • Allied invasion of France marks D-Day. • In August Paris was liberated. • US liberated Guam. • US bombs Iwo Jimo and Okinawa.
• Soviet troops liberate Auchwitz. • Germany surrenders on May 7 after Hitler commits suicide. • Atomic bombs were dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. • On August 14 Japan surrenders.
