US was neutural though both Britain and France had declared war on Germany. Germany and Austria(Anschluss union) ruled by Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia and Poland.
"Winter War" between Russia and Finland ended in March. Soon Germany invaded Denmark and Norway. Denmark surrendered but Norway joined with France and Britain. Germans invaded France, Belgium, and Holland and started the"Lightning War". Though they had the help of the British Expeditionary Force, the lower countries and France were overthrown by the Germans. First entire air battle was the Battle of Britain lasting from July -September. In Germany there were few planes but many pilots British won the Battle of Britain and slowed Hitler's invasion plans.
Operation Barbarossa(invasion of Russia) was started by Hitler. In Englands major cities the Blitz continues. North African allies in Tobruk resist German attacks. USA enters war after attack on Pearl Harbour.
Setbacks at Stalingrad and El Alamein causes Germany trouble. Japanese conquere Singapore in Feburary. Turning point of Pacific War is marked by the American victory of the Battle of Midway. Massive execution of Jews at Auschwitz.
Germans surrender at Stalingrad marking their first major defeat. North African allies postpone invasion of Italy. Italy surrenders to Germany when invasion is launched. In Burma British and Indian forces fight the Japanese.
In Anzio allies bomb monastery at Monte Cassino after landing. In eastern Europe Soviet offensive gathers it's pace. Allied invasion of France marks D-Day. In August Paris was liberated. US liberated Guam. US bombs Iwo Jimo and Okinawa.
Soviet troops liberate Auchwitz. Germany surrenders on May 7 after Hitler commits suicide. Atomic bombs were dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. On August 14 Japan surrenders.
