After the
September
11th attack,
Muslim Americans are being treated a lot
differently. They are being treated with disrespect
and hatred, when they should be treated with
respect just like their fellow Americans. Recently,
there has been so many hate crimes against the
Muslim Americans because of their race, culture,
religion, what they look like, what they are
dressed in, or the way they talk. Muslim women are being harassed because of how they are dressed. There are bombings, car ramming, arson attempts, beatings, death threats, and even killings. A man named Joshua Salaam from the Council of American Relations, or the CAIR said that the amount of calls that they are getting from the general atmosphere of hatred has been too many to count. Some Muslim Americans are getting fired from their jobs without any reason at all. Others are getting run off the road and shouted at in foul language. Two racially motivated killings are being investigated by the FBI as a violation to the federal hate crime laws. In Dallas, Texas, a Pakistani grocer was killed. And in Mesa, Arizona,an Indian immigrant who had a beard and wore a turban was shot and killed at the gas station he ran. He was of the Sikh faith, which are getting the most hostility because their appearance resembles that of Osama bin Laden. There was another Sikh man that was pulled off a train. A man was killed because he looked like a Muslim, but was actually an Egyptian Copt, a Christian. Bigots do these things based on ignorance and their targets are always wrong. Currently, the FBI has been investigating 40 hate crimes against Arab-American citizens and institutions. President Bush thinks
that treating Muslim Americans badly is wrong. He
says, "Those who direct their anger in the wake of
the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and
the Pentagon should be ashamed." Muslim Americans
make an incredibly valuable contribution to our
country and should be treated with respect. We
should all listen to what he says because it is
very important. We do not want a repeat of what was
done to the Japanese Americans after the bombing of
Pearl
Harbor. The
internment of Japanese Americans was an incredible
wrong that was done to a people because of their
race. It should never happen again. This is a picture
of President Bush. President Bush went on to say, "The face of terror is not the true face of Islam. The CAIR says that they condemn the terrorist attacks. They don't follow the behavior and thoughts of the majority of Muslims and that we are Americans too. "Nahid Awad, CAIR's group executive director said, " There is no place in Islam for violence and terrorism against innocent people. "He called all Muslims who helped during and after the September 11th attack,"the true face of the community. "These Muslims were firefighters, blood donors, relief workers, and doctors who treated the victims. He also said that the majority of Muslim scholars all over the world condemn the attack. Awad said that the tragedy of the act of these few is that Americans do not know the "beautiful religion of Islam." After the terrorist attacks on September 11th, Muslim Americans have been treated with little or no respect. A couple of reasons why they are being harassed this way is because of their appearance and their religion. Muslim Americans should not be judged by their looks, their last names, how they dress or the way they talk. It is important that we teach other the way we would like to be treated. We should really respect one another and talk to each other so that ignorance of race or religion doesn't exist. We need to learn from our mistakes. That's why it is so important to know history does not repeat itself. We do not want our country to be full of prejudice, like the Japanese Internment Camps again. We must learn from our past.
