True
Colors

After September
11, 2001 much prejudice has been shown across
the United States. Because of this prejudice,
people have lost their lives. Not because these
people did or said anything to hurt or offend
someone. No, these people just looked like or
dressed like those people who committed the act
of terrorism against the United States. Although
we cannot bring those people back to life, we
can try to make sure that no one else loses
their life because of prejudice. Here are some
personal things that I have and want to do to
stop prejudice.

I think
that I have done some things for bad
and some things for good in my life.
Something that I have done for bad is
when I have seen someone that looks
different from me, I judged them. I
made small comments like "Look at their
hair" or "What are they wearing?" I
have also said things that gave someone
the wrong idea about someone I know,
but I did nothing about it. Although no
one has gotten physically hurt, I can
never know for sure if someone is
feeling hurt. I must think through
things, and realize that many things
can go without being said.

Although I have
done some wrong things in the past, I feel that
I have done other things that have benefited me
and those around me. Something that I have done
is sung in our school Music Ensemble which has
performed songs and plays that share a lot about
what it is to be free, not to judge others, and
other subjects such like those. Our ensemble has
performed at two of our local malls and in our
Fourth of July parade. Therefore there was a
number of times where many have heard our
message. Also I am helping to create a website
on how the Japanese American people were treated
after World War II, and how that relates to how
the Middle Eastern people are being treated
today. I hope that that site will make more
people aware that prejudice still goes on in our
world today. I have also done small things like
when others are not treating someone else
kindly, I have stuck up for that person and not
always but sometimes that person is not picked
on anymore or for at least that time
being.

I try to do what I can to prevent prejudice, but I
want to do a lot more. I also want to help organize some
sort of charity project, at our school or at my church
that will help those who have been affected by September
11, 2001. Although that will not necessarily stop
prejudice it may show those prejudice people that those
in the Middle East are not bad.
I think that I have a long
way to go to become a person that can really make a
difference, but I am glad that I have had the opportunity
to really study about this topic and that I was able to
write this which made me really think about what I
do-good and bad, and what I want to do.
I feel that everyone does
things without thinking about the outcome and that
everyone makes mistakes, but I know that when someone
takes someone else's life for basically no reason at all,
that person needs to realize that it is not just
something that they can just say "Oops," and let it go.
Everyone needs to think a little bit harder and try to
understand that some people made a terrible mistake, but
not all of the people that look and dress like them are
awful. We must all learn to accept others and find their
True Colors.
