Medals Awarded

The highest United States military decoration you can receive is the Congressional Medal of Honor. To be awarded this medal, it would mean you were or are a member of the armed forces and created acts of gallantry and bravery in combat. At the risk of life, and went beyond the call of duty. The first Congressional Medal of Honor was given on March 25, 1863. 463 Congressional Medals of Honor were presented to soldiers in World War II. 21 more Congressional Medals of Honor were awarded to Japanese Americans in W.W.II, on February 2000. Recipients of the medal are provided $400 per month for life, a right to a burial in Arlington National Cemetery, admission for them or their children to a service academy and free travel on government aircraft to almost anywhere in the world. More than 3,400 men have been awarded the Medal of Honor, so far one woman. Dr. Mary Walker, a surgeon in the Civil War.

The Medal of Honor

Medal of Honor recipients

The order of the purple heart for military merit is also called "The Purple Heart." It is an American decoration &endash; the oldest military decoration in the world in present use and the first award made available to a common soldier. It was created General George Washington.

The Distinguished Service Cross is a bronze medal that is awarded to members of the United States Army for extraordinary heroism during operations against an armed enemy. For example, another country that the United States is at active war with. Like fighting on the battle field and a soldier becomes injured and his fellow troops rescue him so that he may receive medical attention.

There are two medals left that I will discuss, both of which are stars. The Silver and Bronze Star. Both medals are awarded for outstanding service. The Silver Medal is awarded to a soldier who has been cited for gallantry in action. The Bronze Medal is awarded for those soldiers who were involved in military operations. The difference between the two star medals was the Bronze Medal was not awarded to those who participated in aerial battles. For example battles which occurred in the air.

National Japanese American Memorial
A memorial is dedicated to the Nisei soldiers for their heroic accomplishments. The 442nd Regimental Combat Team is one of the most decorated units in American history.

In ceremonies in northern Italy, Lieutenant General Mark Clark presents one of the Presidential Unit Citations earned by the men of the 100th Battalion.

For being this heroic, the 442d Regimental Combat Team and the 100th Infantry Battalion received less than what they gave. They gave their life, and even though it was a great honor to be awarded these medals it does measure up to giving your life. These soldiers were brave, loyal, and gallantry, this is what these medals stand for.
