History
Of
Boxing

In "Time For Andrew" John showed Drew how to box so he could defend himself against Edward.

Fighting with fists started about 6,000 years ago in an area we know as Ethiopia , where it went to Ancient Egypt, and throughout the Mediterranean area. The sport didn't get into the Olympics until 688 B.C. The Greeks used a version of boxing in which the two players would sit on rocks and fight until one got knocked out. With the spread of Christianity in the 15th and 16th centuries boxing disappeared from Europe completely. It came back in England in the 17th century.

The matches were fought in the Royal Theater in London. At the time the sport was a mix of wrestling and boxing. The boxer could grab and throw his opponent , and jump on him and hit him when they are down.

In 1719 James Figg opened a boxing academy in London. Figg was a great fencer and boxer, his academy was patterned after the fencing academies of that time. One of Figg's students Jack Broughton came up with the first rules and the use of boxing gloves. The gloves were called "mufflers" to protect the face and hands. Gloves were only used in practice though. Boxing has evolved in many ways since then. One way is now they box for millions of dollars.
