A great activity is a field trip or family trip to your
state botanical garden! One day in January we went to Athens,
Georgia, to the State Botanical
Garden of Georgia.
It's a
two hour drive from Newnan to Athens. We arrived midmorning to find
Ms. Hood, Education Coordinator, presenting a puppet show on what plants
need to grow and stay healthy.
Later,
we met Ms. Shenk, Education Director of the Gardens, who took us into the
bog garden and told us about the varieties of pitcher plants growing in
the bog. She cut several pitchers for us to take home and dissect.
We
spent the rest of the morning taking pictures of potted pitcher plants and
other plants in the green house. You can see many of our pictures in
our photo gallery. A day or so later,
we dissected the pitchers and found many interesting things.
We
missed a day of school for this trip but it was worth it. Our day at
the gardens and the experts we met helped us tremendously with this
project. We recommend that you go to your state botanical
gardens for a fun day.
