United States Pre-1880-Native Americans

Learn about different American Indians and what they have gone through.

American Indians
American Indians have been influenced in many ways by the government. They have had to leave their homelands, have been treated poorly, and in some cases have started wars with the United States.

Black Hawk War
The Black Hawk War of 1832 is an example of that. It started when Sac and Fox American Indians started ot go back to their homes in Illinois they had been forced out of. They had lost the land in an uncertain treaty signed in 1805. The settlers in Illinois panicked and te governor called up the military. At first that Indians evaded the army, but they pursued them and at Wisconsin Heights there was a major battle and they routed the American Indians at Bad
Axe, a place on the Mississippi River.

The Trail of Tears
There have been other American Indians forced off their land, too. The Trail of Tears is famous. It is a route the Cherokee and Choctaw Indians were forced to take leaving their homeland. Other Indains had to move off theri land, too, such as the Sioux, Seminoles, and many others.

The Seminole War
Some of the Seminoles resisted the relocation act. Osceola led the group of Seminole warriors. After their second open attack where they won, but still had many fatalities, they started hit and run attacks. Commander after commander failed to stop the Seminoles. Finally the generals decided to deceive the Indians. Osceola was invited to a peace talk with a fag of truce, but when he got there the military threw him in jail. After a few months Osceola died of a throat ailment and malaria. Other Seminole chiefs then took over. But the military decided to use the Indians form of attack, hit and run. The last battle was on Christmas when the American army won.

Government Influenced American Indians
As you can see, the government influenced the American Indians a lot. From moving them out of theri homelands to wars, the government did not treat them very well.

Amusement Park Activity

Policies influening Businesses- Pick two amusement parks, say Disney and Universal Studios. Disney has been around for a while Universal is newer. So they start having a marketing war, trying to put Disney out of business. However, Disney fights back with more advertising on their side too. This activity requires two groups, one to be the old amusement park and one to be the new one. Also pick around three people to be the judges. Have each side come up with more and more marketing ideas, trying to beat the other amusement park. Then have the three judges pick which amusement park they would go to, based on the adverising. That side wins!
