Many Traditions
There are many traditions that are still present today. For example, our language and clothing are big traditions. We have and still will use carefully and meaningful.

China Traditions
Bodily images have long been central to self-culivation traditions in China. While recent stuides have shed light on bodily representations and practices of earlier periods, we still know little about how the bodily images and practices envoled in redcent times. Past studies have largely overlooked the diversity, historical context and changes of the self-cultivation traditions, tending to treat later practices as simply coherent and transparent extensions of those found in ancient classes.

Focusing
Focusing on new developments in the bodily representions and practices and practices from mid-Quing to eatly 20th century China, this panel explores the emerging discourse of the female alchemical bodily represtations from the 18th century, the "scientific" representations of the alchemic body in early Republican period, and the death prepartion rrituals of a Buddihist monk during the 1940's. These studies seek to uncover changes as well as continues within various traditons of bodily represtations and practices at different historical moments since mid-Quing.Continuing themes from the earlier panel on self-cultivation traditions of premodern China, this panel will show how fundamental notions of self-cultivation tradtions such as body, form, and transformation have been considerably redefined of reformulatedin the diffret historical contexts. Moreover, they will highlight how such issues of moderity as gender; science, nationalsm, and tradition have also come to shape the contours of the bodily images and practices of late Quing and moderen China. These new perspectives will also cintrubute to the field of histories of Chinese religons, culture and medicine.
