Net Force

Learn...Forces and motion will move your brain.

Forces
Forces have both a magnitude and direction. Often more than one force acts on an object at the same time. The overall effect of these forces is called the net force. The change in motion of an object is related to the size and direction of this net force.

Different types of Motion
The three most common types of change in motion are speeding up, slowing down, and changing directions. Wind, water, steam, burning gases, and springs exert friction, buoyancy, lifts, and forces. Gravitational, electrical, and magnetic are the most familiar from a distance.

Forces and Net Forces
Forces can be added together to determine the net force acting on an object.

Ball direction
If the net force on an object
is perpendicular to the direction
of the object's motion, the force
willchange the direction of
motion of the object but not the
speed of the object. The direction
of the acceleration and the net
force for an object moving in a
circle with constant speed are
toward the center of the circle.

Sunshine State Standards 6-8

Science/Force and Motion

Standard 2: The student understands that the types of force that act on an object and the effect of that force can be described, measured and predicted (SC.C.2.3).

Objective 6: Learn the ways in which a net force (i.e. the sum of all acting forces) can act on an object (e.g., speeding up and object traveling in the same direction as the net force, slowing down an object traveling in the direction opposite of the net force).

Amusement Park Activity

There's one there and there and there... - While looking around at an amusement park, what rides and attractions do you see that might use a net force.

Did you know...

Splash Attack is the park’s
wildest and wettest
attraction, featuring a
1,000-gallon wooden bucket
that empties every seven
minutes on unsuspecting
guests 40 feet below that
means the force of gravity
and other forces make
water hit people harder.

Vocabulary

Exerts- makes an effort

Gravity- Force that
attractsbodies towards
the center of the earth

Universal- done by all
