Energy from the Sun

Learn...Microwaves will cook your questions just right.

Microwaves
One form of travel is microwaves. Microwaves are very short waves of electromagnetic energy that travel at the speed of light. Microwaves are used in microwave ovens and are in the same family of frequencies as the signals used in radio and TV broadcasting.

Different EMR
The arrangement of all types of electromagnetic radiation in order of decreasing wavelength is known as the electromagnetic spectrum. The different types of EMR differ from one another only in their wavelengths and frequencies. The visible region of the spectrum ranges from the longer wavelengths red light to the shorter wavelength violet light. The range of colors on the visible spectrum is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. The infrared is close to the red and ultraviolet is close to blue. Infrared Radiation is the release of energy as electromagnetic waves in the electromagnetic spectrum just past the red part of visible radiation.

Wavelengths
The wavelengths of infrared radiation are shorter than those of radio waves and longer than those of light waves. They range between approximately 10-6 and 10-3 (about 0.0004 and 0.04 in). Infrared radiation may be detected as heat, and instruments such as bolometers are used to detect it.

Shape of a wave
The frequency and wavelength of light are inversely related (as wavelength decreases, frequency increases) by the formula:

n = c/l
n = frequency in hertz (Hz)
c = speed of light (in m/s)
l = wavelength (in m)

What energy really means
Most people say the definition of energy is the strength you have but there are many different defines of energy. The work done by a constant force (F) is given by W= (F COs (theta)) s where s= total displacement and theta= the angle between the applied force.

Sunshine State Standards 6-8

Science/Energy

Standard 1: The student recognizes that energy may be changed in form with varying efficiency (SC.B.1.3).

Objective 3: Knows the various forms in which energy comes to Earth from the sun (e.g. visible light, infrared and microwave).
