The Sun

learn... about the interesting characteristics of our sun.

The Sun
To understand the sun you must picture the inside. The inside layers like the earth expect the sun has three layers the Convection zone, Radiation zone, and the Core.

The Core and the Radiation Zone
The sun's energy is produced in the core and on the earth we know this because we feel the heat and see the sunlight. When the energy is produced it travels outward to the radiation zone where it is carried by particles called Photons.

Convection Zone
It takes millions of years for a photon to get to the next layer the Convection zone. Once the energy get to the convection zone it travels more rapidly by gases instead of Photons. Gases and Bubbles at this layer mix like a pot of boiling water. This bubbling is called granulation.

The Sun is a StarThe Sun is also an active star that displays sunspots, solar flares, erupting prominences, and coronal mass ejections. Life wouldn't be possible if there was no sun. The sun is a giant, spinning ball of very hot gas, and is fueled by nuclear fusion reactions.

Convection zone- the last layer of the sun.

Radiation zone- the second most inner layer.

The Core- The inner most layer of the sun.

The Sunstar
The sun is a very hot ball of gases like most stars. The sun isn't the brightest in the sky but finding one brighter is very rare. One of the star that is brighter is Pollux which is about 35 million light years away in the Gemini, of the twins.

The Milky Way/ Red Dwarfs
Most star are faint and cool stars called the red Dwarfs. Most of the stars in the Milky Way galaxy are red Dwarfs 80 out of every 100 are RD (RD= red dwarfs). The nearest one to the earth is beyond the sun just over a light year.

Sunshine State Standards 6-8

Science/Earth & Space

Standard 1: The student understnds the interaction and organization in the Solar System and the universe and how this affects life on earth (SC.E.1.3.).

Objective 3: Understands that our sun is one of many stars in our galaxy.

Amusement Park Activity

Star player -When you go to an amusement park, you can look at the sun and then at night look at the stars and compare the two. You should then realize that they are similar.
