Estimation Strategies

I bet you can't estimate how much you will learn within these pages but I bet you will learn a lot while we discuss estimation strategies with amusement parks!

Explanation-

Rounding numbers is a very important and useful mathematic skill. Sometimes numbers are more exact then you really need them to be to provide useful answers. In some cases you mgiht want to estimate an answer using numbers simple enough for mental math in your head. In both cases you can make your work easier by rounding. Do the following activities to improve your rounding skills.

How to round-

The Kumba ride at Busch Gardens in Tampa Florida can hold 42 riders at a time.

About how many riders is that?

42 Find the place value
42 look to the right of it
42 if it is more than 5 add 1 to the digit your rounding to, if its less than leave it
42 turn all the digits behind the digit your rounding to to zero
40 is the answer.

Examples-

The first american roller coater was not in an amusment park or city, but in the hills and mountains of Pennsylvannia. The Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway was a lot more like a runaway train than a roller coaster yet it is considered a forefather of today's modern coaster. The Mauch chunk Switchback railway brought coal down the mountain in a steep drop creating a wild drop for the workers.
In 1872 they built the Hautu Tunnel. It provided a new, less dangerous, less exciting way of transporting coal through the mountain, not down it. The old track wasn't being used, so they allowed civillians to ride it, for a price.
Round the legnth of the track to the nearest thousandths

The Kumba at Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida has a duration (ride time) of 2 minutes and 54 seconds.
About how many minutes is the ride?

HINT: Use 30 as your five

Most people round times on the clock, for example, if it's 7:21, you'd say a syllable and say 7:20.

Sunshine State Standards 6-8

Mathematics/Number Sense, Concepts and Operations

Standard 4: The student uses estimation in problem solving and computation (MA.A.4.3).

Objective 1: Uses estimation strategies to predict results and to check the reasonableness of results.

Amusement Park Activity

Time Out!- Try timing a rollercoaster with a stopwatch. Then try rounding the time. Do this with other rides such as the merry-go-round, and find which ride lasts the longest.

Brainstorming Fun

Pencil Count- Count the number of
yellow, red, blue, green, and orange
pencils in the classroom. How
many are green? Yellow? How
many are primary colors? How
many pencils total?

Vocabulary

Duration- a legnth of time; the
total time something takes.
