Converting Units of Measurement

Learn to use background knowledge and text structure to make complex predictions.

Explanation for Metric

This is a simple objective, as all you need to know is how to convert within each system. The meter is the metric systems main unit. It was discovere when the legnth from the north pole to the equater was divided by 10,000,000,000. To find another unit in the metric system from meters, divide to find a larger unit, multiply to find a smaller unit. And it's quite easy. Meters to decamters, you divide by 10, hectometer is 100,kilometer is 1,000. To find the smaller units, you multiply. Like decimeters, you multiply by 10, centimeters is 100, millimeters is 1,000. You can also use the Multidivide system with volume and weight.

Explanation for Customary

This gets EVIL. You'll understand why the rest of the world uses the Metric system after you read this.

1 foot-12 inches
3 feet-1 yard
1 mile-5280 ft
Those are really the basic things. Check the Links area for further study.

Sunshine State Standards 6-8

Mathematics/Measurement

Standard 2: The student compares, contrasts, and converts within systems of measurement (both standard/nonstandard and metric/customary) (MA.B.2.3).

Objective 2: Solves problems involving units of measure and converts answers to a larger or smaller unit within either the metric or customary system.
