Geometric Concepts

Sentence on geometric concepts

Explanation
Basically what you are doing in this line of work is visualizing and illustrating shapes combined, subdivided, and changed.

Symmetry
Symmetry is simply when you can split an object in half and they look exactly alike. Like on Dueling Dragons the roller coaster at Islands of Adventure in Orlando FL, when they are only inches away from hitting each other instead they go straight down on this part of the coaster and they form a line of symmetry... except for there color they look exactly alike.

Reflections
A reflection is a transformation that flips a figure over a line. So say you are on a roller coaster and your just riding along going straight and suddenly you so a 180° turn going downward so now it looks like a reflection from the tracks going staright above the tracks that are under those tracks that are upside down and going straight.

Congruency
Congruency is like symmetry except instead of the figure being being the same but turned, its not at all turned. It has to be the same length, same angle, same turn, same everything. Like on a loop on a rollercoaster, both sides of the loop are congruent.

Sunshine State Standards 6-8

Math/Geometry and Spatial Sense

Standard 2: The student visualizes and illustrates ways in which shapes can be combined, subdivided, and changed (MA.C.2.3).

Objective 1: Understands the geometric concepts of symmetry, reflections, congruency, similarity, perpendicularity, parallelism, and transformations, including flips, slides, turns and enlargements.

Amusement Park Activity

Amusement Park Fun- After
Chicago's World's Columbian
Exposition in 1893, the number
of amusement parks in the
United States grew rapidly. By
1919, there were about 1520 parks. Because of the Great Depression, which began in 1929, only 400 were left by 1935. Find the rate of change in the number of parks from 1919 to 1935. Give your answer in parks per year?

Brainstorming Fun

Go to an amusement park and
try to find as many geometric
shapes as you can and as you
get older try to see if they rise
as you write them on a piece
paper.

Vocabulary

the state of being reflected.

Congruent - Corresponding; congrous.

Perpendicular - Intersecting at or
forming right angles.
