Writing to Demonstrate Comprehension

Writing to demonstrate comprehension is all around us, you do it in school for reports and such.

Book Report
When you have to write a book report for school, you are showing that you understand the book that you have read. Normal reports consist of the author's name, book title, publication date, and a short summary of the book.

In order to be able to write a book report students need to be able to identify several main points such as the purpose, and point of view.

Paraphrase
To paraphrase means to re-write in your own words. So if you're assignment is to paraphrase a selection from a book, then you should read the information and rewrite it in your own words.

Essay Qusetions
A well written paragraph essay should consist three things. One of these is an introduction sentence that should tell what the remainder of the paragraph will be about. The next is three detail sentences that help to support and explain the main idea. Lastly, a good solid conclusion that sums things up and basically restates the main idea.

Critical Thinking Questions
Critical thinking questions require a thought provoking answer. This answer should be well planned and thought out. Also to answer a critical thinking question you need to have a strong opinion and factual basis of the topic. Answers to these ehould be one or two paragraphs long.

State Assesment Writing Tests
These writing tests last about forty-five minutes. The first five minutes is for brainstorming, the next ten minutes for planning an outline. The remaining thirty minutes is reserved for writing the actual essay. These writing tests are graded on a one to six scale (one being the lowest) based on relation to the writing prompt, use of vocabulary, and proper grammar usage.
