Author's Prefrence
The prefrence the author has and writes about it.

Reader's Prefrence
The prefrence the reader has and reads about it.

Overall Prefrence
Writing or reading a book without prefrences would be almost imposible. Without prefrences, the reader/writer would have nothing to read/write about
