The Plot

The plot moves things along. Without a plot, you don't have a story. Learn all about the plot of a story here.

What is a Plot?
Plot is the action that takes place in a story in order to build suspense and interest. EXAMPLE: Disney's Toy Story

Setting
Where the action takes place in a story. It could all happen in a single room, at a baseball park, around the globe or on the moon. EXAMPLE: In Andy's Room, at Sid's House, At Pizza Planet and on the Road leaving town.

Main Character
The central character around which all action takes place. EXAMPLE: Woody

Character Development
An author needs to reveal his characters. There are several ways he/she can do this:

  • Through what the character says/does.
  • Through what other characters say about the character.

Central Conflict
The overall problem with which the main character struggles. EXAMPLE: Woody feeling as though his affection from Andy was taken over by the new shiny toy, Buzz Lightyear.

Foreshadowing
A hint as to something that will come later in the story.

Crisis
The turning point in the story. Things usually go wrong here while the main character tries to solve the main problem. EXAMPLE: Woody and Buzz got lost when Andy took them to Pizza Planet.

Climax
The high point of interest in the story. EXAMPLE: Time is running out because Andy was moving from town and they were stuck at mean Sid's House. They get out...AND...they were left behind...it is a mad rush to get onto the truck.

Resolution (Denouement)
The problem is resolved one way or another. EXAMPLE: Woody and Buzz make it back to Andy and their friends.
