Roman Roads

Romans were famous for the roads they built. The path where the road would go was cleared of rocks and trees. The Romans tried to build their roads as straight as possible. Next a trench was dug. A layer of large stones was put into the trench. Then a layer of broken stones, cement and sand was packed onto the large stones. The next layer consisted of broken tiles mixed with cement. On top of this was a layer of paving stones. These were pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle. They fit tightly together. A curb was put at the sides of the road to channel away any extra water.

We can only imagine what a difficult time the Romans had building these roads. We had a terrible time trying to piece the small stones together when making the diorama above.
