Writing
The major change from the Phoenician alphabet to the Greek one of the eighth century
was the addition of five letters to represent the vowel sounds.

The Greek calendar was divided into
months. The months began with the new moon. The months were named after festivals in each
city.

Earth
Erathosthenes drew the first good map of
the world. It was not flat like the previously drawn maps. Erathostehenes even measured
the size of the earth. Aristarchus figured the earth was small compared to the sun. He
also said the earth revolved around the sun.

Money
Many city-states made their own money.
Money was made from gold, silver, or bronze. No longer did people in Greece have to trade
goods for goods.
