Djoser, son of Khaskhemwy, ruled during the third Dynasty around 2630 BC. He ruled for almost twenty years. He engaged his vizier Imhotep to build him a pyramid to protect his remains. The structure was built by adding one mastaba on top of another. There were a total of six terraces each about 200 feet high. This was later called the Great Step Pyramid. It is the oldest monumental architecture still in existence. |

The Step Pyramid was built at Saqqara, the burial ground near the capital of Memphis. It included not only the pyramid, but a group of shrines and related buildings as well. |
