Independence, Missouri

  • established in 1827
  • jumping off point for several trail groups
  • was 3 miles from Blue Mound--a hill pioneers climbed to see what lie ahead

Chimney Rock

  • today's estimate height 325 ft.
  • made up of a spire of sandstone and clay rising above the prairie
  • located in western Nebraska
  • most spectacular landmark on the Oregon Trail

Courthouse and Jail Rock

  • made of clay, sandstone and volcanic ash
  • the stone looks like a square
  • pioneers would go out of their way to write their names or notes on the rock
  • located south of Bridgeport, Nebraska
  • 400 feet in height

South Pass Trail

  • founded by Robert Stuart
  • most important landmark because it was the only path through mountains
  • the pass was similar to a valley
  • width of the trail was several miles
  • crosses the continental divide

Independence Rock

  • discovered in 1830 by William Sublette
  • named "Great Register" of the desert because people carved their names in it or painted names with axle grease
  • halfway point of the journey
  • one of the most famous landmarks
  • made out of large granite
  • located near Casper, Wyoming
  • Stonecutters were close by charging 5.00 a name

Blue Mountains

  • gold was discovered 1862
  • most direct route to Oregon City
  • tough terrain

Oregon City

  • established in 1829 by John McLoughlin
  • marks the end ofthe Oregon trail
  • people settled there because it was the first city west of the Misssissippi River
