Fort Kearny

  • established in 1848
  • built to protect emigrants
  • located where all the different routes met
  • major supply post for both military and pioneers
  • more than ,2000 pioneers and 10000 oxen passed through Fort Kearny in a day (during the busiest years)
  • located in central Nebraska on the Platte River

 

Fort Laramie

  • once was called Fort John
  • took 40 days or more to reach from Independence, Missouri
  • built in Wyoming for camping and fur trading
  • oldest fort on the Oregon trail
  • military center for the United State military

Fort Bridger

Fort Hall

  • established 1834
  • built by Nathaniel Wyeth along the Snake River
  • 80 foot square foot log structure
  • set up in location for the fur trade business

Fort Boise

  • established 1840's
  • built by Thomas McKay of the Hudson Bay Company by the Snake River
  • also built to compete with Fort Hall
  • supplied goods to the wagon train during the 40's
