- established in 1848
- built to protect emigrants
- located where all the different routes met
- major supply post for both military and pioneers
- more than ,2000 pioneers and 10000 oxen passed through
Fort Kearny in a day (during the busiest years)
- located in central Nebraska on the Platte River

- once was called Fort John
- took 40 days or more to reach from Independence, Missouri
- built in Wyoming for camping and fur trading
