Creator of "Beetle Bailey" and
"Hi and Lois"
Mort Walker is the creator of the comics of "Beetle Bailey" and "Hi and Lois"He was born in 1923 as Addison Morton Walker, in El Dorado, Kansas. Mort grew up in Kansas City, MO. His parents were artists, so Mort got a lot of practice. He sold his first cartoon at the age of 11, and already had a weekly strip at the age of 15. When Mort was 18 he was the chief designer at Hallmark Cards. Then he served in the Army for 4 years. Mort graduated from MO University in 1948.
Mort Walker started "Beetle Bailey" in 1950, then he made the comic "Hi and Lois" in 1954. He did 7 other not-so-famous cartoons, but "Beetle Bailey" and "Hi and Lois" were his best, so he says.
Mort had the honor of winning the Rueben Award for Cartoonists, and many other awards, too. Mort considers the International Museum of Cartoon Art (in 1974) his greatest achievement.
In 1985 he married his wife Cathy which made a family of 10 kids. Now he lives in Stamford, CT and Boca Raton, FL.
