Glossary

astronomers- a person who studies object in the universe

atmosphere- tht outer most gasous layers of a planet, moon, or star; some bodies have no atmosphere

axial tilt- see axis.

axis- an imaginary line running throught the ploes of a celestial body around which the body spins

Celsius- a unit of measuring temperature

chromosphere- a bright, hot layer of gases surrounding the photosphere of the sun

core- the inner part of the sun where fusion occurs; the inner most part of the earth, consisting of an inner solid portion surrounded by an outer liquid region, inner most part of a planet

corona- the transparent zone beyond the chromosphere of the sun visible only during a total solar eclipse

craters- a circular, cup-shaped depression on the surfaceof a planetary body, most commonly caused by meteorite impact

diameter- the distance across a circle through its center

equator- an imaginary line that lies half way between the north and south poles

Fahrenheit- a unit of measuring temperature

fusion- a reaction in which atomic nuclei combine to form larger nuclei

lethal- deadly

mass- a measure of the total amount of matter

moon- a natural satellite of a planet, general larger than 16 km or 10 miles in diameter

nuclear reaction- see fusion.

orbit- the path of an object that is revolving around another object

photosphere- inner layer of the suns atmosphere

planet- a large body in orbit around the sun or any other star

prominence- streams of gases that shoot hight above the sun's surface

retrograde rotation- having direction contrary to the general direction of similiar bodies, opposite from the rest

revolution- moving in a curved path , or orbit, around a center, such as the planets move around the sun

rings- small particals of rock and ice

rotation- the spinning or turning motion of a planet or an object on its axis

solar flare- the sudden increases in the brightness of the sun's chromosphere

solar system- a system of objects in orbit around our sun

solar wind- a stream of charges particals that flows out from the Sun and through the solar system, can interfere with radio

star- a luminus ball of gas that generates energy in its hot core by means of nuclear fusion

sunspots- relatively cool, dark areas on the suns surface

temperature- a measure of the amout of heat that is in an object

trek- very long journey or trip
