Fauna
Ornithologists have
established 51 native bird varieties in the national park. Characteristic
inhabitants of the subalpine beech forest are the middle-spotted woodpecker
(Dendrocopos leucotos), marsh tit (Parus palustris), and redstart (Phoenicurus
phoenicurus); the mountain pine forest community is inhabited by the
ring ouzel (Turdus torquatus), hedge sparrow (Prunella modularis), lesser
whitethroat (Sylvia corruca), and black redstart (Phoenicurus ochruros).
Birds of prey are represented in the park by 8 species.
Mammals are also
well-represented in Risnjak. Among the cloven-hoofed ruminants, the
roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) are quite
frequent, while the most attractive inhabitant of the high mountain
peaks is the chamois (Rubicapra rubicapra). The population of wild beasts
includes the brown bear (Ursus arctos) in the natural limits of density,
then the wild cat (Felix silvestris) and lynx (Lynx lynx). The wolf
(Canis lupus) and the wild boar (Sus scrofa) are only passing visitors
in the national park.
