Geography
In a relatively small area of
about 95 square kilometers from the Adriatic coast up to the highest
peaks of Velebit, there are many natural pecularities
and phenomena thanks to which in 1949 the whole area was proclaimed
national park. At the point where the sea touches the mountain, in vertically
cut and deep canyons of the foothill valley which follows the ridge
of Velebit, there are plenty of interesting and unusual natural phenomena.
The untouched, primal nature arouses people's interest and inspires
visitors.
Canyons
of Velika and Mala Paklenica are vertically cut into the massive of the
Velebit mountain in the length of 14 and 12 km. Creeks with the same name
run in the canyon of Velika and Mala Paklenica deepening the canyon with
their activities, torrential water power and limestone solution. Geological
features of the national park reflect in a hard carst ground in the area
of Bojinac. As well, there are many carst phenomenas in the canyon of
Velika and Mala Paklenica, like karrens, flutes, dolinas, cracks, crevices
and caves formed by intensive water power impact, and due to a great temperature
oscillation.
