Geography
Some people say that
Homer, while describing the enchanted island of Ogigia, Ulyssess and
the nymph Calipso, had our island Mljet in mind. Total area : 100 square
kilometers Construction of
the island: layers of chalk - dolomite and lime-stone Climate: real
mediterranean. Summers are hot and dry, winters are mild and humid.
Temperatures below zero rarely occur and snow is even more rare. Main
inhabitated places are situated in the island's interior.
The sea enters the
island through a very narrow strait and first forms the Great Lake (Veliko
jezero)
and then, through the even narrower strait, it forms the Small Lake
(Malo jezero).
Indigenous alepine
pine forests (Pinus Halepensis)
cover the largest part of the forest areas of the Park. The other forests
prevalent in the Park are holm oak forests (Orno-quercetum ilicis).
