Flora
"From the treetops
all the way to the sea, the trees do fall and cast their shadow on to
the beach; if you happen to be taking a boatride round the island, you
may find yourself sailing in the forest." Thus the poet Ignjat
Dordic describes the vegetation surrounding the lake.
Luckily it is a description that is still appliable today.
The nickname "The
Green Island" Mljet got for the western regions of the island,
within the boundaries of the national park. 90% of the total area is
covered with forest. Indigenous
alepine pine forests (Pinus Halepensis) cover the largest part of the
forest areas of the park. The other forests prevalent in the park
are holm oak forests (Ornoquercetum ilicis).
