One of Africa's greatest maritime achievements is Durban's harbour. Before it was created, there was a sand bar in it's place, which kept ships from entering Port Natal.More and more ships were wrecked off Port Natal, and as bigger, more modern ships were invented, the harbour had to be deepened if it was to be used.Natal had South Africa's first steam railway and the sub-continent'sfirst steam tug. There was also lots of coal and gold, but they were unable to trade internationally without a harbour, so they deepened Durban's harbor.
