Durban
is in Kwa-Zulu-Natal. On Christmas day in 1497, Vasco da
Gama,
a Portuguese explorer, first discovered Durban. There
were
many African tribes living there. There were a few brief
visits
to this area, mainly by shipwrecked sailors, but nothing
really
happened for centuries.

In
1652, people began to settle in Cape Town. In the early
1820's
Britain started to look for the best port where the
British
could trade with the local tribes.
The
British were keen to trade mirrors, blankets, beads and
tobacco
for ivory, horns and hides.
