Golf has been one of the most popular sports in American history.
It is played worldwide. It has a very simple objective. Individual players
try to drive a small, hard ball with several clubs into a number of small
holes. The player who gets it in the most in the fewest strokes is the winner.
The playing field consists of 9-18 tees.
Some historians believe that golf was started in the Netherlands, but historical
evidence tells us that the Romans had played a game with a bent stick and
ball made out of feathers. However, it's also been that the game was pretty
much devised by the Scots in the 14th and 15th centuries. The sport became
so popular that the Scottish Parliament developed law the focus more on archery,
all of which were ignored completely. Later on the Scottish monarchs took
it up. Mary, Queen of Scots, played the game in France were she was educated.
The people who attended her on the golf course were known as cadets. Later
this term was adapted to caddie by the English. These have been superseded
lately on golf courses by golf carts and buggies. Throughout the 18th century
the golf organizations were established. They Included the Royal Blackheath
and the Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. Golf reached its present height
today thanks to television.
The golf course is divided into 18 different sections. These are called holes.
These vary in length. At each hole there is a tee and a hole into which the
ball must land to complete the shot. The original golf balls were made of
feathers packed inside a leather cover. The more recent are made of a liquid
rubber. The surface of the golf is pitted to stabilize flight. Golfers use
several strokes in the game. They include the putt, a gentle tap; the drive,
a long shot; and the approach shot. All of these demand complete accuracy.
Golf clubs are divided into 2 types, the woods and the irons. Since all clubs
are numbered the woods are 1-5 and the irons are 1-9. Clubs are varied and
have different uses. For example, the woods are for long shots and the irons
used for shorter shots.
Many tournaments in the sport of golf are played every year from the Masters
to the British open. In addition there is Grand Slam golf. This consists of
several competitions. There are also international matches. There are also
other forms of golf including miniature golf and Pitch and Putt.
