Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles
Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, commonly
called "honu" by locals, are often seen basking on the warm sand of many of
Hawaii's beaches. They are also seen going in and out with the tide, near
the rocks, trying to snatch a bite of "limu", or seaweed. Honu come in many
different shades of green, from a dark, almost brown color, to a olive shade
of green. Each year, female turtles mysteriously return to the exact beach
they were born on, to lay around 100 eggs. Sadly, only a few of these eggs
will make it to be adults. Hona are one of the many native Hawaiian creatures
on the Endangered Species List.
