Kona is the tourist oriented part of the big island. There are many places to dine and to shop. The climate is a humid, hot desert like area. Deep sea fishing tournaments take place all year round off the Kona coast. The central part of Kona, Kailua, is the location of many shops and restaurants. Along Aliķi drive you can find many hotels, and vacation rentals along with one of the Heiau's occupied by King Kamehameha. Just south of Kailua you can visit the National Historic Park, Pu'uhonua O Honaunau (The City of Refuge). This historical site was a place of refuge for Hawaiians that broke the Kapu (law).
