The area called South Kohala is the name for the combined districts of Kawaihae, Waimea, and Waikoloa. South Kohala holds many great things waiting to be discovered by tourists. For instance, if you like pizza you should journey on over to Kawaihae harbor for the delicious food at Cafe Pesto found in the Kawaihae Market Place. If it's pizza or pasta Cafe Pesto is sure to please. Also found in Kawaihae is the Kawaihae Canoe Club. Just up the road is the Pu'ukohala Heiau. The Pu'ukohola Heiau also know as the "whale hill". It was a heiau to the ancient Hawaiian war god, "Ku".
If you are more of a cowboy person you can mosey on up to Waimea. Waimea is on the outskirts of the largest privately owned ranch in the country, Parker Ranch. Closer towards Kohala is the private school of HPA (Hawaii Preparatory Academy). The school has a wonderful curriculum lineup and offers great after school activities. Also in Waimea there are many shops and a grocery store.
If you drive back down the coast you enter Waikoloa Village. Here you can rent videos, go to the park and many other family oriented things. If you journey down the coast even more you can visit the hotel area of Waikoloa. There, such hotels as the Hilton and the Outrigger are found. In the same area you can visit A-Bay, the harbor where cargo ships and warships are often found docked.
If you head back towards Kawaihae you will reach the small town of Puako. Here you can find a very popular beach called Hapuna. Hapuna was rated the most beautiful beach in the United States. Down the road a little farther is the Mauna Kea Beach Resort which also has a very popular beach.
