On the windward side of the Big Island, is the district of Hamakua. The Hamakua Sugar Company was the last working sugar plantation, it was closed early in the 1990's. Waipo Valley, a popular surf spot, is one of the untouched areas of tropical splendor. Descending the steep grade of the valley, you can easily see the taro fields, and bannana farms. This is where the final scenes in Waterworld, starring Kevin Costner, were filmed.
