Place of Refuge

Sometimes, even in the early stages of this website, incorrectly referred to as the CITY of Refuge, the Place of Refuge was a sanctuary for outlaws or beaten warriors in ancient Hawaiian times. Its Hawaiian name is Puuhonua O Honaunau National. It was built in the 1500's by ancient Hawaiians. If you had broken a kapu, you were usually killed by the king, or his warriors. But, if you could make your way to the Place of Refuge without being caught by the king's warriors, you would be safe. Then, the priest there would perform a cleansing ceremony, and you would be forgiven. For the next three years you would live at the Place of Refuge with the priests, and other outlaws there. After 3 years you were free to return to regular life, but at the rank of a commoner.
