Using old clothes, Egyptians encased the body in several layers of linen.

In the Ptolemaic era a ring made of plant material, called the ring of justification, symbolized the passing of death's judgment and the successful entry into the next world.

The brain was removed. The empty skull was then filled with a liquefied ointment. As it hardened, the liquid pooled at the back of the skull (shown here in red). A wooden board placed under the body or a stick inserted into the deceased gave support to the body (shown here in green).
