at the core of all information technology. Although
most of us work on small personal computers (PCs) or microcomputers,
these are not the only computers you'll encounter. In this topic we first
explore the different types of computers and what they are used for, then
look in details at how they work. As you proceed through this topic, you
will learn how to:
* Explain why there are different types of computers.
* Explain why information systems use binary numbers and digital signals.
* Explain the
purpose of the central processing unit (CPU), memory
(RAM and ROM) buses, ports and how they work.
As you might have
noticed that computers come in a variety of size and
shapes but are best distinguished from one another by their capabilities.
Different types of computers are used for different tasks. In large
corporations, you find some of the larger and more powerful computers.
