first electronic digital computers was designed by John Atanasoff (1903-199?) and Clifford Berry at lower State University in 1941.Their machine, called the ABC or the first to use vacuum tubes to make calculations. The computer was never completed, and the project was abandoned in 1942.

Atanasoff had suggested that lowa Atate patent the development, but nothing was done. Although not patented, Atanasoff's work was the basis for a case tried in the courts. A challenge was made to the validity of patent on the ENIAC, a later computer, and the courts determined the parents were invalid on the ground that Atanasoff was the inventor of the electronic digital computer, the ABC.
