A Letter from Greece

During the process of research and collection of materials on the topic, we called some relatives of ours from Thessaloniki (Greece), with the request to contact the nestinars ("anastenari" in Modern Greek) in Langada.

To our great astonishment and pleasure, we received a letter from The Thracian Folklore Society. In it they express their gratitude to us, for our interest in "that miracle of faith called - Nestinarstvo". They also confirm the fact, that for generations, they have preserved the vivid memory of emigration from the villages of Kosti, Brodilovo, Vasiliko, Gramatikovo and Marzovo in the period 1914 - 1918, and in 1923. That was the time when some nestinar families settled in Langada (Thessaloniki area), Agia Eleni (Seres area), and Limnohori (Drama area). They give a detailed account of the celebrated holidays, which coincides with the one presented by us (see chapter Holidays). The letter concludes with the firm belief that the Greek nestinars ("anastenari") will manage to keep their customs and culture, in line with the common tradition of the Balkan countries.
