3600 B.C.: Bronze age culture at Ban Chiang, near Udon (possibly the oldest Bronze Age culture on Earth)
1283: Thailand created with founding of Sukhothai
1350: Kingdom of Aytthaya established
1511: Portuguese traders settle in Ayutthaya, marking first contact with Europeans
1767: Burmese invasion succeeded in capturing Ayutthaya; General Taskin established new capital at Thon Buri
1833 First envoy to Thai court
1800: Capital moved from Thon Buri to Bangkok
1900: Slavery abolished
1917: Thailand joins Allies in World War I
1941: Japan invades Thailand
1946: Thailand becomes 55th member of the United Nations
1997: Thai Baht crashes, sending the Thai economy into a period of recession
