Religion, a Pillar in Thai Society
The influence of the Buddhist religion, which claims followers in about 95% of the population, can be found in just about every aspect of Thai life. It is considered by many as "one of the two sacred cows of Thai society," the other being the monarchy. The teachings of Buddha serves as a steady constant for the rapidly evolving society of modern Thailand and is one of the few areas of Thai life that remains mostly untouched by Westernization. Even though most Thai are Buddhists, other relgions such as Christianity and Islam coexist peacefully with Buddhism.
