The Half-Way Monarchy
Like many other aspects of Thailand, the government is a fusion of old and new elements, a mixture of the time-tested monarchy and modern democratic ideals. Remnants of the traditional monarchy still survive even to this day, having survived the trials of communism and the transfer of political power to the people. The government has been accurately compared to a bamboo reed that bends back and forth in the wind without breaking. The adaptability of the Thais and their government has allowed them to remain sovereign throughout their eight hundred years of history and remain true to the name, Thailand, which means "the land of the free."
