Calley, William (1943- )

Lieutenant William Calley was born in 1943 and was the sole person blamed for the My Lai Massacre.

Lt. Calley was called to Vietnam in the midst of the escalating war. Calley was ordered by Captain Medina to find and destroy the Viet Congs. On March 16, 1968 Lt. William Calley led his platoon into the village of My Lai, a suspected Viet Cong stronghold. Lt. Calley ordered to massacre the village and as a result, killed more than 100-200 unarmed Vietnamese. The military charged and convicted Lt. Calley of murder, and sentenced him to life imprisonment at hard labor. William Calley was the only person ever charged in the killing at My Lai.
