Spielberg worked at Universal directing television shows for a few years more but grew tired of the job. He managed to get to direct the 1972 television movie "Duel" but it wasn't until 1975 that real success came with the blockbuster hit, "Jaws". The highly acclaimed "Jaws", broke all previous records netting in $250 Million in total, demonstrated to the public Spielberg's special talent to sustain tension and drama.
From then, things could only get better. In 1977 he filmed "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" an immediate hit about extraterrestrials. Then he went on to filming "Raiders of the Lost Ark" in 1980 together with director/producer friend George Lucas, the film featuring Harrison Ford was a major hit and spawned two sequels and a third is currently in production today. Then in 1982, "Poltergeist" and "E.T." were released simultaneously, both of which were highly successful.
By now, Spielberg was known as a film-making heavy weight. With many blockbuster hits to account for, he was known globally for his talent. He continued filming a few more movies including "Hook" a comical modern-day version of Peter Pan.
