"Mars Attacks!" was Tim Burton's next major film. Tim loved the script of the strange yet amusing film. "Mars Attacks!" opened in the Christmas of 1996 but didn't do well having to compete with various other high quality movies in the cinemas at that time. However, outside the U.S. it was a great hit, grossing about $20 Million dollars on just the first week.
In 1999, Tim Burton directed the blockbuster "Sleepy Hollow". Starring Johnny Deep (who now has appeared in a number of his films) and Christina Ricci, the film brought about varied reviews but was generally loved by the public (and critics). A complex enigmatic film full of dark humour, suspense and terror, not forgetting the fantastic scenes and settings made by Burton, this film is even one of my personal favourites.
Just a few months ago, Tim Burton released his remake of the classic "Planet of the Apes". A blockbuster film of epic proportions, "Planet of the Apes" featured a star-studded cast and larger than life settings, make-up and special effects as well as a complex storyline that kept viewers guessing. Once again, some people loved Burton's film but others didn't. However, Burton's more mature, developed take on the film made it a huge success.
In my opinion, Tim Burton's unique more artistic, more mature take on film-making is for the better. This man is indeed one of today's most talented (and complex) people. His special ability to make great films cannot be doubted.
