Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890)

Vincent Van Gogh is famous for his brave use of intense primary colours and thick brush strokes in his paintings.

Vincent Van Gogh suffered from a serious mental illness during the later parts of his career. It was during this time that he produced some of this greatest works. His paintings are primarily inspired by the Impressionist but Vincent manages to project more expression and emotion into his paintings.

In fits of madness, Vincent cut off his own right ear lobe. With his head still bandaged, he painted a self-portrait of himself. Vincent managed to instill a strange energy in the painting, that is both haunting and sympathetic. Eventually, Vincent admitted himself into an asylum where he continued to paint while he slipped further into insanity. When he took his life 1890, he had painted well over 800 paintings in total.

After his death, his works became immensely popular and were sold for record-breaking sums of money. Today Vincent Van Gogh is regarded as one of the greatest painters of his time.
